Disney and Netflix are getting divorced!

This announcement came about two hours after I’d just said to my wife about how great a selection of Disney (MARVEL) movies are on Netflix but it’s soon to be a thing of the past.

With the contract between the two up at the end of next year, Disney have announced their decision not to renew and will, instead, start offering two new streaming services of their own, one for movies and TV shows and the other for ESPN/Sports services.

The sport streaming services will start next year, with the entertainment streaming service beginning in 2019.

A statement from Disney CEO, Bob Iger:  “Our direct-to-consumer services mark an entirely new growth strategy for the company, one that takes advantage of the incredible opportunity that changing technology provides us to leverage the strength of our great brands,”

Netflix themselves also released a statement: “U.S. Netflix members will have access to Disney films on the service through the end of 2019, including all new films that are shown theatrically through the end of 2018. We continue to do business with the Walt Disney Company on many fronts, including our ongoing relationship with Marvel TV.”

With the second statement my biggest concern was slightly addressed; what about muh Marvel Netflix shows? But it seems that the Disney theatrical distribution deal and the Marvel Television development deal are two separate projects.

So what does this mean for the future of Netflix? What’s to stop other companies from doing the same thing? Will you be signing up to the new Disney services?
